Okay this is the original pilgrim who carried a walking stick, and a seashell which is more a symbol of the many routes on pilgrimage . The pilgrimage dates back to the 9th century.
Today was an easy day first a quick visit to the local monastery – closed of course – but there are 6 monks who support this massive building. I heard they make their own chocolate while they sing Gregorian chants.

We then headed out for the first 10 km which we took slowly since it was the first day and slowly you start to see the many pilgrims on their path – many people do not speak english but everyone shares a ” Buen Camino” and many have been walking the trail from France. It was leisurely through hills and valley, walnut grooves, bee hives and a church about every 2-3 km. Very cool narrow paths and lush farms.

This is am example of the narrow trail and below the first cairn. This was out start at 127km .

Everywhere there is a shell reminder and it usually gorgeous….

First day was spectacular at just 15 km and sunny.
